The High Cost of Cheap Labor

Brooklyn Designers place production as one of their major needs. Individually each organization will eventually decide how he or she persues this solution. however as a group our policies should champion the rights of workers. Sweat shop labor, Child and prison labor as a solution should be reviewed carefully! On the other hand the deveoplment of industry and the creation of employment opportunites, is not a Social mandate as much as it is good political and economic policy!

Many have sought solutions that would help them in their selection of production facilities. I came acrooss some resource, while researching another topic! Though By no means complete it is a start ! Click the read more link for details

Every designer has to at some point consider where and how they will produce their line .  Ultimately it is often a decision that may have costly long term repercussions! I know very few designers that could have afforded the PR cost, much less the loss of  such a huge inventory, as the Gap's recent Child Labor Issue demanded.

Many have said they want to ensure those producing thier clothing is making a living wage.  So What is a living Wage and what standard does a "living wage afford". I found this quote in an article on Modern Day sweatshops

According to independent labor rights organizations in Hong Kong, a living wage in China would be about $0.87/hour. Minimum wage rates vary as they are set by each provincial government, however, they do not meet this living wage. Shanghai's minimum is $0.21/hour, and Guangzhou's $0.26/hour. ("Behind the Label: Made in China," March 1998, Charles Kernaghan/National Labor Committee.)
