April 2006
Over half of South Africans live in rural areas. They experience much less than half the opportunities South Africa has to offer. Smaller markets, less channels of communication, slower circulation of currency, information and ideas all contribute to isolating the rural economy not only from the rest of the world but crucially, from the rest of South Africa as well. Our President has warned of the dangers of two economies emerging side by side in our country, separated by the invisible wall of a broken economic and developmental dialogue.
The Meropa Heritage project has a simple essence - To link the precious skills of our rural women to an existing and well defined demand for beautiful and fashionable clothing the world over.
Rural women are often the most marginalized members of the economic community.
Yet they posses the secret of adorning, of making the commonplace into something utterly special, of making our eyes and minds feel at home in the world again.
But these great couturiers of ours have scarcely been honored- let alone economically recognized. They have been condemned, by need and history, to live in the Eurocentric ghetto of the “curio industry” , a sad fate for our society’s most distinguished geometers and our only pure visual artists.
Meropa is a link between the appreciative global market of high couture and design and the deep inventiveness of our rural craftswomen. It aims to create pride as well as wealth in the rural economy, to create a visual identity for each and every South African and to create a strong economic voice for the thousands of patient women who, for two millennia, have stood by, silently weaving the patterns of our lives.
Meropa Heritage is a unique partnership between traditional rural skills and the international design and marketing capacity.
Ndimande Co-Op and Kagiso Enterprises Rural Equity Fund are moving forward to redefine the future of design and community growth in South Africa.
We look forward to sharing these beautiful designs with you.
Warm regards,
